A Memory from Jo Alice Hodges Orange Grove, Texas: -Grandma's kitchen -baking tea cakes -taking a bath in the pantry in a #2 wash tub -sitting on wooden benches at the table -spreading apple butter on toast -home churned butter -Grandpa's big truck for hauling grain -the mean rooster down at the barn -buying watermelons in Sandia to cool in the shade under the porch -the sound of the wind -sleeping on sheets made from flour sacks -Grandpa's peppermint candy cane -lining up before bedtime to walk to the house I was seven when Grandpa and Grandma moved to Peach Creek Farm in Wharton. We had picnics while picking up pecans to sell and shell. Grandma sewed my doll a quilt, pillow and case on her treadle machine. It was fun to be able to spend the night at the farm. The creek was a special attraction. Grandma gave us pieces of bacon and string and a can to go craw fishing. The best time was when the cousins came to visit, especially Christmas and summer.
